Chicken bedding: choosing a practical material
Good bedding manages moisture and provides a comfortable, usable floor. The best choice depends on ventilation, drainage, stocking density, climate and how you clean, rather than a single fashionable material.
Assess the material
Look for clean, dry, absorbent bedding with manageable dust and a reliable supply. Untreated shavings, suitable hemp products and rice hulls are options to compare locally. Avoid mould, sharp debris, chemical contamination and strongly aromatic products. Very fine material can create dust; long straw can mat when wet.
Assess your setup
Place drinkers to limit wet patches. Check the floor under the surface, not just the fresh top layer. A roof leak or poor airflow will overwhelm an expensive bedding choice. Chicks need suitable non-slip surfaces and materials appropriate to their age.
Compare actual performance
Record purchase cost, time spent cleaning, wet areas and replacement frequency. A more expensive bale can be economical if it stays usable longer, but only your conditions can show that.
Next step: trial one material in a manageable area. Keep the rest of the routine consistent and record the result before changing the whole coop.
