Coccidiosis in chicks: when to seek prompt help

Coccidiosis is one possible cause of serious illness in young birds, but you cannot confirm it from a social-media photograph. Chicks that become hunched, lethargic, stop eating or develop concerning droppings need prompt assessment.

Act on the chick's condition

Check brooder temperature, water, feed access and litter immediately. Keep affected birds protected and contact a vet promptly, especially if several birds are affected or deaths occur. Do not wait for a specific dropping colour before asking for help.

Explain the feed and history

Tell the vet the chicks' ages, arrival dates, current feed, vaccination information if known and any medication already given. Starter feeds and coccidiosis-prevention programmes differ. Do not combine products without understanding the programme.

Correct the conditions

Remove wet contaminated bedding and repair drinker leaks. Avoid overcrowding and use suitable separate equipment for affected groups. Cleaning supports control, but it does not replace diagnosis and treatment when birds are ill.

Next step: keep a chick count and daily notes. Nutritional support alone is not a treatment for suspected coccidiosis.
