Egg and meat withholding periods: record the exact instructions

A withholding period belongs to a specific product use or veterinary instruction. It is not a standard number for all chicken treatments. Brand names can cover different formulations and concentrations.

Check before treating

Read the exact label, species and laying-hen restrictions. If a product is not labelled for the use you need, contact a vet rather than choosing an internet dose. Australian requirements may differ from overseas advice.

Record exposure

Write the product, amount, route, first and last administration, affected birds or pens, and the written egg and meat instructions. If medicine is in shared water, explain that to your vet; exposure may include more birds than the one you intended to treat.

Make the restriction visible

Clearly identify eggs that must not enter food use, and tell everyone who collects them. Follow the applicable instructions for when the period begins and ends. Do not infer safety from normal-looking eggs or an improved bird.

Next step: keep the product label with your health record and ask the prescribing vet to resolve uncertainty. Do not put a universal withholding claim into a permanent care book.
