How to measure and reduce feed waste

An empty feeder measures disappearance, not appetite. Some feed may be eaten, some spilled, some taken by rodents and some spoiled. You need a small measurement trial before deciding that a pen consumes an extraordinary amount.

Establish a baseline

For seven days, weigh feed added and record safe dry leftovers, visible spills and bird numbers. Keep the feed and weather as consistent as practical. Do not put contaminated floor feed back into the feeder.

Change one thing

Inspect feeder height, guards, flow, fill level and rain protection. Watch smaller birds to ensure an adjustment does not block their access. A feeder that reduces spills but leaves birds hungry has failed.

Compare fairly

Repeat the measurements after the change. Convert saved kilograms to dollars using the actual feed cost per kilogram. Record the cost of any new equipment and how much labour it saves. Egg numbers and body condition help check that savings did not come from inadequate intake.

Next step: use the feed tracker to run one pen trial. Waste reduction can improve profit without expanding flock size or buying a new supplement.
