How to read a chicken feed bag
The most useful words on a feed bag may be complete feed or concentrate. A complete ration is designed to supply the intended bird's needs when fed as directed. A concentrate depends on accurate mixing with specified ingredients.
Check five things
Find the intended species and stage, mixing or feeding instructions, nutrient analysis, manufacture or best-before information, and storage directions. Keep a photograph of the batch details. If the label is unclear, ask the supplier before feeding it.
Understand the limits
Crude protein is one measurement. It does not prove that calcium, available phosphorus, energy, amino acids or vitamins are right for your flock. Ingredient lists also do not tell you whether a homemade mix is balanced.
Measure in weights
If mixing is required, weigh ingredients. Different grains do not weigh the same per scoop. Never assume a breeder premix uses the same ratio as another brand. A mixing instruction such as 3:1 must be interpreted from that product's label, not from memory.
Next step: keep the label with your feed tracker so changes in performance can be traced to the actual ration and batch.
