Keeping poultry feed fresh in Brisbane conditions
Feed quality can decline through moisture, heat, pests and long storage. A bargain bulk purchase is poor value if a portion spoils before the flock uses it.
Store for turnover
Keep feed dry, shaded and protected from rodents and wild birds. Follow the manufacturer's storage directions and retain the batch label. Use older suitable stock first, while keeping batches traceable rather than continually topping up an unidentified bin.
Inspect during feeding
Look for clumps, unusual smell, insects, water entry or changes in appearance. Do not assume mould is harmless because it affects only a corner of the bag. Ask the supplier about suspect feed and keep birds away from it while seeking advice.
Keep water away from dry stores
Clean spills, repair leaking drinkers and inspect under storage containers. If you offer any dampened feed, prepare only what can be eaten promptly and remove leftovers; a dry feeder is not a fermentation vessel.
Next step: write opening dates on bags and record spoilage as a business cost. Buy quantities you can store safely and use while fresh.
