Limping chickens and sore feet: inspect safely

A limp can arise from an injury, foot lesion, joint problem or other disease. A dark spot on a foot is not an invitation to cut it out. Protect the bird from further injury while arranging appropriate advice.

Observe movement first

Watch which leg is affected and whether the bird can bear weight, eat and reach water. Check the enclosure for sharp objects, awkward landings and unsuitable perches. Do not repeatedly force a painful bird to walk for filming.

Look without operating

If safe, gently examine the foot and leg for swelling, wounds or entanglement. Photograph findings for your vet. A tight leg band or trapped thread requires prompt attention; if removal is difficult or tissue is injured, seek veterinary help.

Escalate when needed

Severe pain, inability to stand, marked swelling, deep wounds or rapid change warrants prompt care. Bandaging can create pressure problems if applied badly, so use it under appropriate instruction and check it as advised.

Next step: keep the hospital area accessible and record progress. Correcting the environmental cause matters alongside treatment.
