Quarantining new chickens before flock introductions

Quarantine gives you time to observe new arrivals while reducing contact with your established flock. A wire divider inside the same pen is not a robust quarantine system.

Prepare a separate area

Queensland poultry guidance advises at least a month of quarantine for new birds. Plan separate equipment and minimise shared air, runoff, clothing and handling routes as far as practical. Ask your vet how to improve separation on your property.

Care in a sensible order

Attend the established healthy flock before quarantine birds, then clean hands and equipment and change contaminated footwear or clothing. Record appetite, droppings, breathing, weight trends and external parasite findings. Ask for vaccination and health information before purchase.

Do not treat the calendar as a guarantee

A bird can carry infection without obvious signs. Any illness during quarantine needs assessment and may change the plan. Do not move a sick bird into the main flock because the month has ended.

Next step: read the gradual introduction guide and plan a separate recovery space as well. Quarantine and social introductions solve different problems.
