Shell grit and insoluble grit do different jobs

The word grit can hide two different products. Soluble shell material supplies calcium. Hard insoluble grit helps grind coarse food in the gizzard. They should not be treated as interchangeable.

Check the product

Read whether the material is shell, limestone or an insoluble grinding grit. Choose a size appropriate to the birds and follow product advice. Do not assume a bag called grit provides every mineral the flock requires.

Match the diet

Laying hens have substantial calcium needs. Birds eating whole grains or fibrous forage may also need suitable grinding grit. Birds eating only processed complete feed have different grinding needs. A feed professional can help assess a mixed flock.

Keep stations usable

Protect supplementary materials from droppings and rain, label containers and check access for smaller birds. Do not mix extra minerals into feed indiscriminately. Additional grit cannot make a nutrient-poor ration complete or repair mouldy feed.

Next step: photograph your current products and keep their names in the feed record. Clear labels prevent a simple terminology mistake from becoming a feeding problem.
