Three simple chicken enrichment projects to test

Start with projects you can inspect and remove easily. Supervise the first use and check every item daily. The goal is safe behaviour opportunities, not a complicated obstacle course.

A stable perch station

Use smooth suitable untreated material, secure it against movement and choose a manageable height. Allow comfortable landings and avoid sharp fixings. Older or heavy birds may need lower access options.

A protected dust-bath area

Provide a dry, sheltered area with appropriate clean material that birds can enter and leave easily. Avoid adding irritating powders or essential oils. Keep it away from contaminated runoff and review dust levels.

A foraging activity

Use a safe shallow tray with suitable clean substrate and a modest portion of appropriate feed. Remove spoiled or wet leftovers. Check that the tray does not tip and that several birds can participate without cornering one another.

Next step: rotate one activity at a time and note use, cleaning time and any conflict. Do not use dangling strings, swallowable parts or mouldy scraps to make an activity look more exciting on camera.
