Why mixing extra grains into complete feed changes the ration

Replacing part of a complete ration changes every nutrient concentration, even if the bucket looks fuller. Grain can be useful in a professionally formulated diet, but adding it does not preserve the balance of the original feed.

A simple protein example

Equal weights of a 16% protein feed and a 10% ingredient make a 13% protein mixture: (16 + 10) divided by two. This arithmetic describes protein only. It says nothing about whether energy, amino acids, calcium or vitamins are adequate.

Selection changes the calculation

If hens eat the larger grains first and leave fine ingredients, the diet consumed differs from the diet mixed. Look at what remains after feeding. Do not assume powdered supplements are swallowed simply because they were added.

Choose a workable approach

Use a complete feed in a form your birds actually eat, or obtain a properly formulated mix with accurate weighing and quality control. Correct concentrate mixing is different from diluting a complete ration. Keep treats modest and avoid using grain to make hungry birds accept an unbalanced diet.

Next step: record ingredient weights and the exact labels before asking for nutrition advice. A list of scoops cannot reliably establish a ration.
