About Light Sussex

A classic farmyard bird with white feathers, dark markings and a curious character. Light Sussex offer a combination of traditional looks, useful egg production and a substantial build.

Breed at a glance

• Laying ability: Around 200–250 eggs per hen in a productive year as a general Sussex guide.
• Temperament: Generally calm, curious and people-oriented; individual birds vary.
• Egg colour: Tan to light brown; shades vary between hens.
• Weight and size: Large, heavy breed. Adult hens around 3.2 kg and roosters around 4.1 kg.

Before bringing chicks home

Prepare a secure brooder, suitable heat source, chick starter feed, chick-safe drinker and clean bedding before collection. Each release will state the price per chick, hatch date, age and any sexing information. A fertile egg order is a separate product.

Check current availability or contact us about the next hatch. A preorder is only open when the listing has a confirmed collection window.

Collection and photos

Live chicks are for local collection in Brisbane by arrangement. Hatch date, age and any sexing information will be stated with the available group. Please wait for a confirmed collection time before travelling.

Adult bird photographs show our breeding stock, rather than the chicks in a particular hatch. Current chick photos will be added with each release.

Collection and dispatch

Collection in Brisbane is available on Sundays and Mondays by appointment. Live birds are not posted. Preorders are normally ready for collection within 1–2 weeks; we will contact you if there is a delay. Wait for a confirmed collection time before travelling.
